Web Material:  Thermodynamics and the second law

bulletObjectives:
bulletAfter completing this module Students will know that the first law of thermodynamics is a statement of energy conservation.  They will know several different ways to state the second law of thermodynamics.  Students will know the definition of adiabatic, isobaric, isothermal and isometric processes.  They will be familiar with the concept of a reversible engine and the Carnot cycle.

bulletAfter completing this module students will be able to apply the second law of thermodynamics to find the maximum possible efficiency of heat engines.  Students will be able to calculate the maximum coefficient of performance of a heat pump or a refrigerator.  They will be able to explain the basic principle of operation of these devices.
