Module 3

Objectives:

After completing this module students will know that the first law of thermodynamics is a statement of energy conservation.  They will know several different ways to state the second law of thermodynamics.  Students will know the definition of adiabatic, isobaric, isothermal and isometric processes.  They will be familiar with the concept of a reversible engine and the Carnot cycle.  Student will be able to find the maximum possible efficiency of heat engines and to to calculate the maximum coefficient of performance of a heat pump or a refrigerator. They will be able to define changes in entropy and to explain the connection between entropy and disorder.
