Module 3

Objectives:

After completing this module, students will know that the first law of thermodynamics is a statement of energy conservation.  They will know several different ways to state the second law of thermodynamics and will be able to explain the connection between entropy and disorder..  Students will know the definition of adiabatic, isobaric, isothermal and isometric processes.  They will be familiar with the concept of a reversible engine and the Carnot cycle. 
Students will be able to apply the second law of thermodynamics to find the maximum possible efficiency of heat engines and the maximum coefficient of performance of a heat pump or a refrigerator.  They will be able to explain the basic principle of operation of these devices.
